No riding or horse experience is required to join the lesson program. Our lesson program is structured to suit the riding exerpience and polo skills of every player, young and old. Ages 8 and up are permitted to join the lesson program. Younger children are generally not strong enough to hold the polo mallet and control the horse. Students with no or limited riding experience can take beginner riding lessons before signing up for polo lessons. All lessons are held in an outdoor 300' X 100' polo arena with spectacular views of the hills surrounding the Shenandoah River. All horses are tacked up for the students. Due to the size of the horses used for polo, students are restricted to a 250lb weight limit. Lessons are conducted all year during daylight hours, provided there is no rain or snow falling and temperatures are above freezing during lessons.
Beginner Riding Lessons - for those with no/limited riding experience
Do you want to play polo but don't feel comfortable riding a horse yet? No worries! We offer regular riding lessons to adults and kids ages 8 and up for those that want experience in the saddle before picking up a polo mallet. Riding lessons are structured to teach you how to ride a polo horse in an effort to prepare you for future polo lessons.
Beginner Polo Lessons
Beginning lessons teach you how to properly ride a polo pony, hit the ball, learn the rules of the game, and to scrimmage at slow speeds. All beginning polo is played inside the arena. Players may graduate to intermediate/advanced practices at the discretion of the instructors. If you have no or limited riding experience, you may take beginner riding lessons before you join a polo lesson. We encourage students to take a beginner clinic before joining in the beginner group lessons, but it is not necessary.
Intermediate/Advanced Polo Lessons
Students focus on learning the rules and team plays. Practices are generally a stick & ball warm-up period for 15 minutes followed by division into teams and scrimmaging. Instructors act as umpires and help students recognize fouls and improve team plays and horsemanship. Students may play in the annual summer and fall polo tournaments.
Private Polo Lessons
Students may schedule private one hour lessons anytime. Private lessons are the most effective means to fix any riding or hitting problems you are experiencing. The attention is on you 100% of the time. Private lessons or Beginner Polo Clinics are the best choice for a first-time attempt at the sport to see if you want to pursue it.
Beginner Polo Clinics
Mountain View Polo offers one day clinics to those new to the sport or who want refresher training. Students learn about the different kinds of polo tack used on the horses, how to tack the horses up, hitting the ball, rules of the game, followed by a slow scrimmage. Lunch is provided. Adults and children ages 8 and up are welcome. The clinic schedule is announced on the home page and you may call or email us to reserve a spot in the clinic. Clubs, Companies, or Organizations are encouraged to contact Mountain View Polo to arrange team building workshops or private clinics.
Tired of riding in circles? We offer a fun practice every weekend for kids ages 8-15 years. One hour group practice where kids play competitive riding and hitting games. No horse/ riding experience necessary to join. This is a fantastic way for your child to build confidence on, and learn control of the horse, as well as practice hitting the polo ball. Kids can join an interscholastic team to compete against other schools. Playing polo as a child opens doors to universities with polo teams and provides valuable connections in the world!
