Lesson Overview
No riding or horse experience is required to join the lesson program. Our lesson program is structured to suit the riding experience and polo skills of every player, young and old. Adults and children ages 9 and up are permitted to join the lesson program. Younger children are generally not strong enough to hold the polo mallet and control the horse. New students with no or limited riding experience, or no polo experience, should sign up for private lessons where the main focus will be on learning to ride the polo horse and hitting the ball. Discounted packages of private lessons are available. After students become proficient at hitting the ball at a walk and and trot, learn the rules of polo, and are deemed safe riders by the instructors, students are permitted to join the club, participate in group practices, and compete in the club tournaments.
All beginner lessons are held in an outdoor 300' X 100' polo arena with spectacular views of the hills surrounding the Shenandoah River. Advanced polo lessons may also be held on the grass polo field during grass season. All horses are tacked up for the students. Due to the small size of the horses used for polo, students are restricted to a 220lb weight limit. Lessons are conducted all year during daylight hours, provided there is no rain or snow falling and temperatures are above 40F during lessons.
New students are encouraged to sign up for private lessons and/or take a beginner clinic. If you have no or limited riding experience, we recommend you take private polo lessons before joining a beginner clinic, however it is not required. Private lessons can be scheduled Tuesday-Sunday during daylight hours around the club practice schedule. Email us to schedule a lesson.

Polo Pro Polo Clinics
Polo Pro Clinics are a 5 hour clinic for players with some playing experience. Clinics focus improving specific polo skills, such as offside swings, nearside swings, effective riding, rules and team strategy. Clinics typically begin with a video classroom session on videos or chalk board talk on correct and incorrect swings, riding, rules, or team strategy. Participants then mount assigned horses, or their own horses, for a long coached riding session with drills focusing on improving the clinic skill, followed by recording slow-motion video of participants practicing the clinic skill. Participants then return to the classroom to review their videos with a critique and feedback from the instructor. Clinic is $200 for non-members (horse provided), or $150 for Mountain View Club members (horse provided). Contact us to reserve your spot in a clinic: [email protected].
